How we built our Luxury Foam Hybrid Mattress-Part 5: 1.5” Shock Absorbing High Density Base Foam

What is high density foam?

Foam density is the weight - usually in pounds - of a single cubic block (12” x 12” x 12”) of foam in a cushion. For example, if a cubic block of foam weighed 1.5 pounds, its foam density would be 1.5 pounds per cubic foot (or PCF)

Is foam density good?

Foam in this range is at the low end of density and can be considered fair quality; good for specialty uses and light applications.

What is high density base foam?

High-density foams are foam with high weight per cubic foot and therefore have a strong cell structure, which makes the material highly durable. This does not influence how soft or firm the mattress is. Density only indicates quality and durability, not your comfort level.

How can you tell good quality foam?

The first thing to do is to judge the foam quality by its density (weight per cubic ft.). Normally, the heavier the foam is, the better the quality. Lightweight foam such as Commercial Grade Polyurethane foam at 1.2 lb. per cubic foot is a cheap quality foam.

Is it better to sleep on a foam or spring mattress?

Side sleepers tend to prefer foam beds, as they often do a better job of conforming to the shape of the body. People who tend to sleep hot at night may wish to opt for a spring mattress. Innerspring beds offer far better airflow, which helps to keep the bed cool at night.

Tips for buying and using high density foam

The first thing you should do is find the right density – the one that matches your needs. If you need something extra durable, perhaps for a coffee shop outdoor seating, you might want to look at something that’s high resilience and high density, so it stays in great shape for an extended period.

Next up, you want to make sure the foam you’re using is up to standards. The certification you should look out for is CertiPUR-US®. A CertiPUR-US® certified HD foam is free of all possible harmful substances and is safe to be used by humans.

Finally, don’t mistake the density and the firmness. They’re not heavily dependent on one another. Before making a choice, you should measure the density of memory foam. You could have HD foam that is as soft as a cloud and as firm as a rock. Know what you want and if you are not sure about something – ask around or do your research.

- Get high-quality material.

- Get CertiPUR-US® certified HD foam.

- Understand that density and firmness are not the same.

The first and most obvious advantage of the high-density foam is its durability. The reason why it is more durable than regular foam is right there in the name – it's the density. It is compact in nature, and the denser it is – the more durable it is. Essentially, more foam per cubic inch results in a much more durable product.
