How to Sleep Cooler

How to Sleep Cooler

Sleeping requires an ideal temperature. But how do we sleep cooler? Why is it better to sleep cool? By sleeping cool, your body falls asleep faster and enters a deeper sleep which allows for optimal rest.

Why is Cooler Sleep Important?

We hear you should search for a mattress with good airflow so you can sleep cooler… but why? Why is sleeping cool so beneficial and important? Well, sleeping cool is recommended throughout the whole year—not just summer! Not only can you fall asleep faster when you are cooler, but you get a more restful sleep by entering and staying in REM longer, and can even slow down the aging process. The same hormones that promote sleep also promote anti-aging. Win-win, right?

How to Sleep Cooler

  1. Water
Befriend water and use it on and in your body in whatever way possible. Showering before sleep will help you to stay cool throughout the night. Drinking water throughout the day can also help you reduce your body temperature.
  1. Less is Best
When you go to bed, you may want to get cozy and bundled up, however sleeping with thick clothes or layers will only keep you from sleeping cool. Get lighter pajamas—heck, go natural and even sleep naked—and also get lighter bed coverings. Thick coverings will definitely increase heat, trap air, and increase your wait time before dozing off. Try sleeping with a thin sheet instead of bedspread or duvet.
  1. Prevent Sunlight
Preventing sunlight from entering into a room will help reduce the amount of heat that builds up inside your home. You can use blinds to cover the windows, or even consider blackout curtains which further eliminate the sun rays from penetrating a space.
  1. Get Airflow
You may wish to enjoy the fresh air by opening a window near your bed, allowing the evening air or breeze to drift inside. If you have two windows in a room, you can open both for a stronger cross breeze. Ceiling or portable fans can also provide cooler airflow throughout the room while staying cost effective.
  1. Go solo
The less heat generated, the quicker you get to rest. Having someone next to you on the bed—although cozy—can increase the bedroom's temperature. Depending on how warm your room is or how desperate you are for a cooler night’s sleep, you may want to consider sleeping alone.

There is a way to sleep cooler without raising your electric bill. Getting a good night’s rest is crucial for your health. One of the best ways to ensure you get the sleep you need is to stay cool. You will fall asleep faster and wake up feeling better rested. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
